‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Vol. 3 To Mark Drax’s Last Appearance? James Gunn Reveals Details

Fans are excited to see ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ cast sharing the screen with Thor in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’. On top of that, the lovable space crew has one more movie of their own in the pipeline. ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Vol. 3 starring David Bautista as Drax is in the post-production stage after rapping filming last month.

While fans are anticipating which cast members will be reprising their roles in upcoming MCU projects, David Bautista’s Drax is appearing on the screen probably for the last time. In a recent post, James Gunn confirmed the big news.

Guardians Of Galaxy’ director James Gunn recently shared a social media post to commemorate the final chapter of the franchise starring Bautista, Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, and Zoe Saldana.

After over 100 days of shooting & over 3000 shots, this is the slate for the final shot of #GotGVol3 presented to me by the camera crew. It was an easy shot of Rocket seated, 1st with @seangunn, then nothing there, & took everything in me not to break down sobbing on the spot,” Gunn tweeted.

He continued, “The majority of the last ten years of my life have been spent working on & thinking about the Guardians. I still have a long road ahead of me with VFX & editing, but it was still momentous to me. It is somewhat simple to explain to others how much I love this cast & crew. It is more difficult to explain how much I love these characters – that I see them as parts of myself & parts of those I love, & filming them, & writing their words, is a way of expressing that love.”

Gunn concluded, “Again, I’ll still be working with them over the next year until release, but shooting that last shot was a reminder of the warm impermanence of life & love, & how that impermanence makes it so precious, so valuable, & is a good reason to be grateful for what I have right now.

Last year, Bautista admitted he was in a “weird place” with playing Drax. Gunn recently took to Twitter to confirm that Vol. 3 will probably be the character’s last outing. “I try to never say never when it comes to these things but, yes, it’s probably Drax’s last movie and the end of the story for this group of Guardians,” Gunn replied when a fan asked if this will be Drax’s final movie.

During an interview last year, Bautista said that the role of Drax changed his life. But admitted he thinks Marvel “dropped the ball” on Drax’s story.

“That role changed the trajectory of my life,” Bautista told Collider. “It’s always going to be special to me. Now that I’m four films in… I really wished they would have invested more in Drax, personally. Because I think Drax has more of a story to tell. I think Drax has a really interesting backstory which they dropped the ball on. That’s no dig on Marvel. They had their slate, I know what they’re focused on, that’s what they have slated out. But man, I think they really missed the ball on Drax. He has such a great backstory. Selfishly, as a performer, that would have given me the opportunity to show different sides of Drax, emotionally.

He added, “And physically as well. Because, if you notice, Drax, although he looks like a badass, you look at him and he looks terrifying, but Drax gets his ass kicked more than any other Marvel character…The whole ‘Destroyer’ thing they just threw that out the window…people just fell so in love with the comedic side of Drax they tapped into that, then they tapped into it more, then they really dug a hole into it. But we missed a huge boat on that character and I don’t think it’ll ever come back around. But I’m really just looking forward to finishing out this whole journey.”
