One of the most obvious things that has never been explained in the MCU is how mutants have always been around but haven’t been noticed until now. And Marvel might have a few answers to that question.
Did The Infinity Stones Trigger Mutations?
An interesting fan theory ties the rise of mutants to the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame’. What if the Infinity Stones weren’t only responsible for changing the universe, but they awakened something dormant within certain humans? It would provide the MCU with a savvy tie-in between the Infinity Saga and the X-Men.

The Infinity Stones are used twice in the final battle in ‘Endgame’. Bruce Banner uses them to bring back everyone erased by Thanos, while Tony Stark later uses them to eliminate Thanos and his army. In both moments, there is an enormous release of cosmic energy.
What if that energy had repercussions other than the restoration of half the universe? The concept gets even more interesting as the MCU has already shown that the Infinity Stones have the power to affect human abilities. Wanda Maximoff possessed magical potential before her encounter with the Mind Stone, but the Stone dramatically amplified what was already inside her.
Perhaps the same principle could apply to mutants. The people who have dormant mutant genes may have been perfectly normal for many years, but the unparalleled energy unleashed by the Stones might’ve activated the genes.
A New Generation Of Mutants
This may be the reason why characters like Jean Grey, Cyclops, Storm, Rogue, and Emma Frost are coming up at the same time. They wouldn’t necessarily be newly created mutants. Their abilities could have been waiting inside them for generations, with the events of ‘Endgame’ acting as the catalyst.

And honestly, it would be a pretty satisfying explanation. It would make the Infinity Saga matter to the MCU’s future without rewriting everything that came before it. The Snap wouldn’t have produced mutants; it would have merely opened the door for them.
This is just a fan theory, of course, until Marvel confirms it. However, as the MCU is getting ready to fully embrace the X-Men, it would seem much more intentional to tie their arrival to the biggest event in the franchise’s history.
