The possibility of returning to Westeros with Arya Stark has been one of those rumors that refuse to disappear. Now, Maisie Williams has finally addressed the reports surrounding a potential ‘Game of Thrones’ sequel movie centered on her beloved character. And her response suggests fans shouldn’t start celebrating just yet.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Williams revealed that she had seen the reports herself but admitted she knows nothing about an Arya project actually moving forward. More importantly, she acknowledged that bringing Arya back would require some serious thought about how the character has changed.

I saw that, too, I was like, huh? I don’t know, really,” Williams said. “She would have to be developed in some way because I feel like I’ve changed so much, and I feel like what people loved about Arya is that she was always a child doing things that were quite grown-up.”

It’s an understandable reaction. After spending eight seasons watching Arya transform from a rebellious young girl into one of Westeros’ most dangerous assassins, seeing her return would be exciting. However, it could also be tricky.

Williams pointed out something that could become the biggest challenge with an Arya sequel: the character audiences fell in love with was a child who constantly found herself behaving like an adult. Arya’s appeal partly came from watching a young girl do things far beyond her years.

And that’s an important point. Arya’s journey ended with her choosing a completely different path. After helping defeat the Night King and surviving the destruction of King’s Landing, she sailed west of Westeros to discover what lies beyond the known world. A sequel would therefore have plenty of room to tell a completely new story.

The Arya Movie Is Far From Confirmed

Rumors about an Arya-focused project gained attention earlier this year when reports suggested that HBO was considering bringing popular ‘Game of Thrones’ characters into a potential sequel project involving Jon Snow.

However, there is currently no confirmation that an Arya movie has been officially greenlit, and Williams’ comments certainly don’t suggest she’s preparing to return. For now, HBO’s confirmed Game of Thrones movie project is ‘Aegon’s Conquest’, which explores the Targaryen ruler who first united much of Westeros.

Still, it’s hard not to imagine Arya returning someday. Her ending deliberately left her story open, and that’s exactly why fans continue to wonder what happened after she sailed away. For now, though, Arya Stark’s return remains far away.
