Steve Rogers might have stepped down from the role of Captain America, but if the newest ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ rumor is true, he will be subjected to one of the hardest experiences in his entire career in the MCU as Nomad.
Doom Could Also Use Steve’s Family Against Him
The reported details of the plot claim that one of the Latverian witches will disguise herself as Peggy Carter to try and manipulate Steve. This would be particularly cruel, considering Peggy represents one of the most important emotional connections in Steve’s life. Given all he’s lost in the MCU, seeing Peggy again may mean he can be a target for Doom’s grander scheme.

According to the rumour, Doctor Doom will take Steve’s son, James Rogers, to Latveria Castle. James is then supposedly murdered in front of his father. That would make the emotional ballgame entirely different for Steve’s return.
Steve has been fighting for most of his life, believing that people can be protected from the horrors of war. Because of this belief, he has lost friendships, his identity, and even decades of his life. Losing his own son would be an almost unimaginable loss.
It would also give a much more personal means of breaking Steve than just defeating him physically. That’s why the supposed Peggy disguise is so intriguing. If Doom is attempting to play on Steve’s emotions before taking away the person he loves most, it would be psychological warfare rather than a typical superhero duel. And honestly, that sounds exactly like the kind of cruelty you’d expect from Doctor Doom.
Nomad Could Be Crucial To ‘Doomsday’
The rumor also suggests that Nomad will be a central character and figure in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. Yet, he might have a much smaller part in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. That would be more than just a nostalgic appearance of Captain America; it would be ‘Doomsday’ Steve’s big story.

It may also be the reason why Marvel is bringing Chris Evans back, but not as Captain America. Steve Rogers returning as Nomad allows the character to move forward while still acknowledging everything he has experienced.
If James Rogers’ alleged death actually happens, Marvel could be setting up a Steve Rogers who enters the fight against Doom with something far more personal than a shield. This time he wouldn’t be fighting to save the world alone. He would be fighting with the loss of nearly everything.
