Joe Russo has now confirmed that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will bring back a version of Thor that has been missing from the MCU for years: the hardened warrior audiences saw in ‘Infinity War‘.
Thor Has Already Lost Almost Everything
Russo described him as “a warrior who has lost everything” and said Thor will be searching for meaning through battle against the greatest foe he has faced. That makes his journey into ‘Doomsday’ particularly interesting, because Thor has already spent years trying to figure out what comes after all the loss.

The last time the Russos had Thor, he was in one of the darkest places of his life. By ‘Infinity War’, he had lost Asgard, his father Odin, his mother, Mjolnir, Loki, and eventually Heimdall, while Thanos wiped out half of his remaining people. His entire journey became about finding one thing he could still accomplish: killing Thanos. He nearly destroyed himself trying to achieve it.
Then ‘Endgame’ took Thor somewhere completely different. After failing to stop Thanos, he withdrew from the world and became deeply vulnerable. His eventual return to the fight helped him begin rebuilding himself, but he never really escaped the weight of everything he had lost.
Love Gave Thor A New Purpose
The last time we actually saw Thor was at the end of ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’, where he had taken responsibility for raising Love, Gorr’s resurrected daughter. The two were traveling together and fighting threats across the universe, giving Thor a purpose that had nothing to do with revenge or proving himself.

That makes Russo’s comments especially revealing. Thor now has someone to protect, but Doomsday appears to be pulling him back toward the warrior mentality that defined him in ‘Infinity War’. The difference is that this time, he isn’t simply hunting revenge. He is facing Doctor Doom.
And according to Russo, the real question isn’t whether Thor can win the battle. It’s whether fighting this war will finally give him the meaning he has been searching for.
