Jon Bernthal Credits Tom Holland For Helping Him Land The Punisher Role

Jon Bernthal‘s portrayal of Frank Castle has become one of Marvel’s most celebrated performances, but the actor has now revealed that the role might never have happened without an unexpected push from Tom Holland

In an interview with THR, Bernthal revealed it was the Spider-Man star who convinced him to audition for ‘Daredevil‘ Season 2, which led to him becoming the Punisher.

Bernthal said that it was Holland who encouraged him to make an audition tape for ‘Daredevil‘ Season 2. The actor said that Holland even told him about Frank Castle and that he should take the opportunity seriously.

It was Tom who was like, ‘You’ve got to audition for this. You’ve got to make a tape for this.’ He explained to me who the Punisher was,” he shared. It’s amazing how impactful this advice turned out to be, in retrospect. Bernthal’s take on the Punisher was almost perfect with its emotional depth, explosive action, and raw intensity. 

Eventually, his performance resulted in a solo series of his own, and Frank Castle became one of the most compelling antiheroes in Marvel. It’s also a great full-circle moment for fans. Holland’s helping hand helped Bernthal secure one of Marvel’s most challenging roles. Now, years later, both actors are among the most recognizable faces of the franchise.

Bernthal also admitted that it wasn’t simple to bring ‘The Punisher: One Last Kill’ to life. He said he spent five years trying to work out the tone of the project with Marvel Studios, wanting to not lose what made him unique.

Navigating, of not doing a lighter version that maybe they wanted, I insisted that I had to be the creative force behind it.” For Bernthal, the Punisher’s brutal, emotionally driven nature wasn’t something that could simply be softened without changing the character’s identity.

The decision resonates with longtime fans who have applauded Bernthal’s dedication to Frank Castle and his authenticity. He didn’t back down from the darker side of the character. Instead, he chose to fight for a version he believed audiences deserved.
