One of Marvel’s biggest ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ spoilers could be right in front of you. The chessboard in the promotional material, with all the pieces except the King taken off, might be more than a great image.

The message is obvious if the King is playing the role of Doctor Doom: Doom thinks he has already mapped out all the Avengers and X-Men can do. However, there is one piece that may not even be on the board.

A black spider in the shadows might symbolize Spider-Man, implying that Peter Parker is the unpredictable factor that Doom has not considered. But with all the things Peter has already seen with the multiverse, this could be very significant.

Doctor Doom wouldn’t go into battle without a plan. Victor von Doom is one of Marvel’s best strategists in the comics, and ‘Secret Wars’ makes it clear that he can shape entire realities to bring a world of his own design. That’s a very apt chess metaphor.

The Avengers and X-Men may very well be Doom’s pawns. He is familiar with their strengths and weaknesses, and their relationships, so he can predict what they will do before they do it.

So the events of ‘Doomsday’ may well be a crushing defeat for the heroes. Doom doesn’t necessarily need to kill everyone. He just has to get them in a place where they can’t stop him. And that’s where Spider-Man could become dangerous.

Peter Parker has already faced the multiverse issues in the MCU. ‘No Way Home’ showed that Peter’s decisions can impact the universe beyond the bounds of his universe, and the memory spell eventually left him entirely alone. That is quite a contrast to the other heroes.

Doom might be able to foresee Captain America, Doctor Strange, or an experienced X-Man will do. But Peter is young, emotional, and unpredictable. More importantly, he’s already lived through times when reality itself was falling apart around him.

The chessboard theory becomes even more interesting if Spider-Man isn’t represented by one of the visible pieces. Perhaps it’s that point. Doom thinks everyone is playing his game, only to find that he forgot about Spider-Man.

‘Doomsday’ could be about Doom proving that he’s always several moves ahead. However, ‘Secret Wars’ may show him facing something unexpected: Peter Parker coming out of the woodwork and ruining everything Doom thought he had accomplished.
