Rebecca Romijn‘s revival as Mystique in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ could have much more significance than just being a familiar X-Men face. The most obvious one is: how can Raven Darkhölme be alive when Dark Phoenix demonstrated Jean Grey killing her? The answer may actually go all the way back to Wolverine.
Wolverine Changed More Than One Timeline

In ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’, it was shown that Logan’s time in the past had a significant impact on the future. Wolverine saved Mystique from killing Bolivar Trask, and thus created a new version of history that allowed characters who were previously dead to be alive again, like Jean Grey and Cyclops.

However, Dark Phoenix threw a wrench in that new timeline. In that reality, Jean lost control of the Phoenix, and eventually Mystique passed away. That’s an interesting idea for ‘Doomsday’: what if the timeline we watched in Dark Phoenix was only one branch created after Wolverine changed history?
Perhaps Logan didn’t just make one replacement timeline. Maybe his actions created many different possibilities, and the different Ravens went down different paths.
‘Doomsday’ Could Finally Explain The X-Men Timeline

This theory is even more intriguing because ‘Doomsday’ is introducing the Fox X-Men universe to a bigger multiversal tale. Recent material surrounding the movie identifies the Fox reality as one of three major universes still standing, alongside the main MCU reality and the Fantastic Four universe.

So Romijn’s Mystique doesn’t necessarily need to be resurrected. She may just be another Raven. It would make her coming back more significant. In Dark Phoenix, rather than Jean’s actions being ignored, Marvel could announce that another line of the X-Men’s timeline saw Mystique survive.
And honestly, that would be a very X-Men way to handle it. Wolverine has been working to save one future for years. He may have accidentally created several. But if ‘Doomsday’ is right, Logan’s biggest time travel consequence may not be the one he recalls. It could be the consequences he never anticipated.
