The latest answer from Anthony Russo has only made the Tony Stark–Doctor Doom theory more interesting. The director was asked directly whether there is any “connective tissue” between the two characters and responded, “You tell me.”
That is hardly a confirmation, but it is also not the clean denial that would immediately kill the theory.
The Iron Man Sound May Be More Important Than It Looks
The biggest reason the theory keeps coming back is the ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ footage. Tony’s first Iron Man suit-building scene is accompanied by that instantly recognizable hammering sound, and the sound reportedly carries into new footage showing Doom forging his own mask.

On its own, that could simply be a deliberate parallel between two brilliant inventors. Tony built armor to survive. Doom builds his mask as part of becoming something entirely different. But Marvel knows exactly how audiences react to these details.
Putting those moments together practically invites the question: why make the connection so obvious if there is absolutely nothing underneath it? That doesn’t prove Tony and Doom are secretly the same person. It does, however, explain why the theory refuses to disappear.
Marvel Is Keeping The Door Open Without Opening It
There is an important distinction here. The Russos have repeatedly framed Downey’s role as Victor von Doom, and Marvel originally introduced his return specifically as Doom rather than as a resurrection of Tony Stark.

That means the simplest explanation remains that Downey is playing a completely different character. But Anthony Russo’s “You tell me” response makes the casting mystery feel intentional. Instead of saying there is no connection whatsoever, he essentially pushed the question back toward the audience and told them to wait for the movie.
And honestly, that is probably the most frustrating, and most Marvel, answer possible. Maybe Doom is a Stark variant. Maybe he is completely unrelated to Tony. Maybe the connection is thematic rather than literal. Until ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ reveals the truth, Marvel seems perfectly happy to let that question hang in the air.
