Marvel’s new ‘Zodiac’ series is going to be more than just a superhero story, as the mysterious Disney+ project is said to be taking a turn towards British espionage, political intrigue, and morally complex characters.

The series, which was announced over the weekend, will start filming in London in spring 2027, with a planned release in 2028. Marvel has divulged little about the story, leaving fans to speculate on its cryptic logo and possible ties to existing MCU characters.

But the first reports indicate that ‘Zodiac’s story may not be about superheroes in suits of armor, but about the perilous realm of intelligence agencies and the secrets they wield, which can be as formidable as superpowers. Knight Edge Media reports that Marvel is set to hire three top British actors, two male and one female.

Interestingly, these characters reportedly won’t have comic book counterparts, suggesting that the studio is building an entirely new cast for the series. In a previous interview with Collider, Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum described the project as an “international espionage narrative” of secrets, lies, betrayals, and “unexpected acts of loyalty”.

The report also notes that the series is similar to FX’s popular spy drama, ‘The Americans’, which has been praised for its grounded narrative and morally complex characters. That’s a particularly interesting comparison because Marvel’s espionage projects have often struggled to balance political intrigue with the franchise’s larger superhero mythology.

If ‘Zodiac’ embraces that grittier approach, it could give the MCU a refreshing change of pace. Not every Marvel story needs a world-ending threat or a superhero saving the day. Sometimes, the most compelling conflicts happen behind closed doors.

Could MI6 Connect The Series To Existing MCU Characters?

Although the three reported leads are original characters, that doesn’t necessarily mean ‘Zodiac’ will exist in isolation. Marvel has already introduced MI6 through Olivia Colman’s Sonya Falsworth in ‘Secret Invasion’. If the new series focuses on Britain’s intelligence work, then Sonya could be a natural fit for the role as the agency’s head.

The other option is the addition of Marvel Comics’ British intelligence agency, MI13, which is responsible for supernatural and extraordinary threats. It has also been tied to a number of characters like Captain Britain and the Black Knight, which can be used in future MCU stories.

At this time, though, there isn’t any evidence that Zodiac will be directly continuing ‘Secret Invasion’ or be bringing in MI13. Theories regarding a possible connection to the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents also remain speculative. Either way, its reported direction could make it one of Marvel’s more intriguing upcoming television projects.
