Years of cutting-edge technology, multiversal chaos, and billion-dollar resources later, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is bringing Peter Parker in a whole new direction.

The upcoming Marvel movie isn’t only providing Tom Holland’s character with a fresh look, it’s embracing the idea that Spider-Man works best when he’s relying on his own ingenuity.

In a new interview, Holland and director Destin Daniel Cretton have confirmed that Peter’s new outfit was specifically made to pay homage to the previous Spider-Men in the movies. It’s supposed to be a nod to the more earthy roots of the character.

It might be a minor detail, but one that is important to longtime fans, as it shows how much Peter has changed since ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’.

The creative team wanted the new costume to be a combination of all three live-action Spider-Men. He described it as a “Spider-child” of the suits worn by Peter Parker and the versions played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.

So the result of that is the suit that I think is beautiful in its simplicity. The suit does have a bit of a tactile feel to it. We are embracing the folds and the wrinkles. When it moves, it’s actually material, and you can see the human beneath the material,” Cretton told Sony.

The outcome is a less complicated design, which breaks away from the sleek, high-tech Stark suits that have been a hallmark of Holland’s MCU career. The costume has a handmade look, featuring visible folds, wrinkles, and a more tactile texture.

The purpose of the suit was to make it look real and human. The filmmakers don’t want to obscure Peter behind the high-tech mask; they want audiences to see the young man beneath the mask.

It’s a method that seems to be tailor-made for where Peter’s story is at right now. When he was left heartbroken at the end of ‘No Way Home’, Peter was left with nothing but determination and his sense of responsibility.

The costume isn’t the only callback to previous Spider-Man films. Peter is expected to gain organic web-shooting skills in ‘Brand New Day’. He is expected to be able to shoot webs, a skill that Maguire’s Spider-Man is known for.

All of these changes point towards Marvel adopting a more traditional take on the character. Peter seems like he’s going to rely on his own abilities, instead of billion-dollar gadgets or superhero contacts. That’s an interesting idea. Holland’s Spider-Man has been through a lot, from world-ending threats to adventures across the multiverse.

But fans have always wanted to see him return to the street-level action that is the essence of the character. If that’s the case, then ‘Brand New Day’ could be the start of a new era for Peter Parker, one that will celebrate Spider-Man’s cinematic legacy and give Holland’s hero a chance to stand on his own two feet.
