Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has been a major part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years, starring in some of the most epic adventures in the MCU. He has been on missions across the world, faced off against multiversal villains, and fought alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

However, if the first trailer of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is any indication, Peter Parker’s next chapter is quite different. Instead of upping the ante with another universe-destroying danger, Marvel seems to be returning Spider-Man to his roots, and that’s what makes this movie so thrilling.

The biggest thing that the Brand New Day trailer has revealed is how much Peter is cut off. The world has forgotten who he is after the events of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. He’s no longer surrounded by friends or supported by Tony Stark’s influence.

That configuration results in a version of Spider-Man that fans are familiar with from the comics. Peter is all alone and trying to deal with normal issues while also having to handle his superhero duties. It’s a breath of fresh air from all the bigger storylines of the MCU these last few years.

The trailer also indicates a greater emphasis on street-level crime. The film appears to be more focused on the criminal element of New York than on threats from the cosmos, given the apparent antagonism with The Hand and Frank Castle’s Punisher. That’s a breath of fresh air for many longtime Spider-Man fans.

Overall, it looks more grounded, but the film is not giving up on weird comic-book ideas altogether. ‘Brand New Day’ could be taking a shot at one of Spider-Man’s weirdest ideas ever. There are a few moments in the trailer that suggest that Peter’s abilities are developing in a way that is not what we’d expect.

He doesn’t seem to be using web-shooters anymore; instead, he’s producing his own web. Something weird is going on with his body. That possibility adds to a horror aspect that is never seen in Spider-Man films. Comic fans will immediately recall the tales of mutations and monstrous Spider-Man transformations.

If Marvel is going that way, it could help to make the film stand out in the MCU. With a grounded crime story and disturbing elements, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is one of the most intriguing upcoming projects in Marvel. After a series of multiversal chaos, Peter Parker’s biggest struggle might be personal, and that could make for his most compelling film yet.
