The noir experiment is over. Prime Video has reportedly canceled ‘Spider-Noir’ after just one season, bringing Nicolas Cage’s live-action version of the Spider-Man character to an unexpectedly early end.

‘Spider-Noir’ Was A Different Spider-Man Story

The decision comes only four months after all eight episodes of the series premiered in May 2026. For a show that received strong reviews and developed a passionate fanbase, the cancellation is bound to sting.

Spider-Noir followed Cage’s Ben Reilly, a private investigator with spider-like abilities working in 1930s New York City. Rather than simply recreating the familiar Spider-Man formula, the series leaned heavily into detective stories, pulp crime, and classic noir aesthetics.

And honestly, that was what made it so interesting. The series stood out by presenting Spider-Man mythology through a much darker and older lens. Cage’s performance as Ben Reilly brought a strange combination of hard-boiled detective energy and eccentric comedy to the character.

Another genuinely clever feature was the option to watch the entire series in either black-and-white or color. It wasn’t just a visual gimmick; the two versions gave certain scenes noticeably different moods and encouraged fans to revisit the story. That makes the cancellation particularly disappointing.

Even Strong Reviews Couldn’t Save It

Spider-Noir’ received strong audience and critical reactions, with Rotten Tomatoes scores reportedly reaching 92% from audiences and 90% from critics. However, viewership apparently couldn’t maintain that momentum.

Nielsen reportedly recorded 2.6 billion viewing minutes during the first six weeks after its premiere, but the series subsequently dropped out of Prime Video’s Top 10. Despite its cancellation, ‘Spider-Noir‘ had already made a major mark at the 2026 Emmys, earning 11 nominations, the most of any Prime Video series that year.

The nominations recognized areas including cinematography, production design, title design, sound, music, stunts, visual effects and makeup, showing just how much the series’ distinctive noir aesthetic impressed awards voters. Still, this may not be the end of Amazon’s Marvel ambitions.

Prime Video and Sony Pictures Television reportedly have multiple superhero projects under discussion as part of their broader deal. So while ‘Spider-Noir’ may be dead, Sony’s Spider-Man universe on Prime Video might not be. For fans, though, losing Cage’s strange, wonderfully chaotic detective Spider-Man after only eight episodes feels like a particularly cruel cliffhanger.
