If a new rumor is accurate, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ could give fans a matchup that has been a long time coming: Thor and Steve Rogers fighting side by side, and potentially facing an enemy together inside the TVA.

The leak is that Thor and Steve will meet with one of Doctor Doom’s Council members in the TVA before eventually taking on the bigger fight against Doctor Doom. There is no official confirmation of anything, but the concept is a perfect fit with the multiversal direction of the upcoming Avengers story.

Thor and Captain America have one of the most iconic friendships in Marvel Comics, but the comics have occasionally delved into what happens when their ideologies or personalities clash. One famous example comes from ‘The Avengers’.

In it, Thor and Steve have fought alongside each other countless times while also occasionally clashing over their different approaches to leadership and responsibility. Their relationship is especially intriguing because it’s a combination of two very different aspects of Marvel.

Steve is the ultimate human soldier; Thor is an immortal god. The two characters have a sort of honor that is very old-fashioned. That difference might make it fun to see one of Doom’s potent variants take on one of the other ones. The fact that Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers are both back on screen would be enough to make old-time MCU fans cry.

The TVA Could Be the Perfect Setting

The TVA adds to the intrigue of this rumor. The Time Variance Authority is one of the most significant portals to alternate timelines and realities in the MCU after Loki. If Thor and Steve battle one of Doom’s Council, it may give ‘Doomsday’ a chance to venture into a part of the multiverse that the Avengers would not otherwise come into contact with.

There’s also a nice comic-book parallel here. The multiverse stories in Marvel often involve bringing together characters from different eras and realities, which means they have to interact with versions of characters they thought they already understood.

If Steve and Thor really do get a major fight sequence, hopefully Marvel doesn’t treat it as just another action scene. These are two of the MCU’s most iconic heroes. Give them a moment that feels earned.
