Is Martin Scorsese’s Spell About Superhero Films Not Being ‘Cinema’ Working?
In recent times, both Marvel Studios and D.C. Studios have been struggling to bring comic-book fans back to the cinema halls. Even after bringing Michael Keaton’s Batman back on screen in ‘The Flash’, it failed to attract the audience. The excessiveness of these films is increasing manifold, but the audience numbers have been reducing.
During the ‘Empire’ interview, Martin Scorsese commented about the MCU films. He said that he does not see them, even after trying to watch them. Scorsese opined, “But that’s not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well-made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks.”
The filmmaker added, “It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”
Though it would be preemptive to discard the MCU in general, Recently, ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ bent the storytelling pattern of the MCU and created something wonderful. The film also had a decent box office number, with $690 million worldwide.
