It’s hard to imagine anyone but Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man in Sam Raimi’s trilogy. His awkward charm, emotional performances, and the struggles of an ordinary guy with extraordinary responsibilities helped to shape a generation of superhero movies. However, Maguire’s return was not certain before the release of ‘Spider-Man 2’.

The first Spider-Man was a huge success. However, behind the scenes, salary negotiations and concerns about Maguire’s back almost led Sony to switch its main star to another future Marvel star: Jake Gyllenhaal.

Maguire was reportedly paid $4 million for the original movie and was offered $8 million for the sequel. However, his agent allegedly demanded $25 million or 10% of the movie’s gross revenue. Sony refused to accede to those demands, and the talks got more complicated.

Then the health issues came. Maguire is said to have described his back as being in the worst condition it had ever been after shooting ‘Seabiscuit’. The prospect of serious injury was a real concern as ‘Spider-Man 2’ was expected to be even more challenging than the original, with the stunts being three times as demanding.

Maguire’s team prepared medical reports indicating he was able to meet the demands of the sport. But director Sam Raimi was afraid the actor might seriously injure himself, and started looking for a replacement.

That’s when Gyllenhaal came into the picture. The actor was said to be called in to replace Peter Parker, sparking some fascinating what-if scenarios. Sony’s co-chairman even described the news leaking to the press as “awful.”

Even though it was uncertain, Maguire still came back as the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. The actor was said to have signed a new contract for $17 million, and has since stated, “I was never concerned about my compensation.” The comment, which comes after a story that is usually presented as a wage battle, brings a new dimension to the story.

The negotiations were not just about the issue of Maguire’s fitness to play, but also his health. ‘Spider-Man 2’ eventually grossed almost $796 million worldwide and remains one of the best superhero sequels ever.

It’s hard to believe that Gyllenhaal was about to swing through New York as Peter Parker. He eventually went on to join the MCU as Mysterio, but it’s still interesting to imagine him in the original Spider-Man suit.
