The actor revealed that he wanted to achieve the look through practical effects rather than rely heavily on CGI. “I requested that we do what we were going to do, practically,” Nelson explained. Samuel Sterns’ journey to becoming The Leader is one of the MCU’s most intriguing slow burns.
In ‘The Incredible Hulk’, Sterns is a mild-mannered scientist whose exposure to Bruce Banner’s gamma-infused blood caused his head to begin mutating. However, his storyline was left dangling for over a decade. This lea many fans to wonder if Marvel had abandoned the character altogether.
Now, Sterns is back, and he’s not just a Hulk nemesis anymore. In ‘Brave New World’, The Leader’s intellectual prowess and mastery of mind-control technology make him a dangerous antagonist. Additionally, new details suggest that Sterns will play a pivotal role in the plot.

However, Nelson now sees the delay as a blessing in disguise. “I’m glad it took this long because the character I [play] actually demands my own life experience over the past 18 years,” he explained. For Nelson, the extended hiatus allowed him to tap into the emotional complexity of The Leader.
“There’s a real depth and rage and pathos to this guy, and I needed 18 more years of life experience to try and pull that off,” he added. Moreover, Nelson’s return as The Leader in Brave New World brings a sense of continuity to the MCU while adding layers to one of its most enigmatic villains.
