Tom Holland has finally opened up about the difficult reality of growing up inside the Marvel machine. After becoming Spider-Man at just 18, Holland spent the next decade largely at Marvel and Sony’s disposal.
However, reaching a point where he could finally say “no” has changed the way he approaches his career.
Tom Holland Says He Can Finally Say No

Holland recalled signing his original Marvel deal as a teenager, describing the experience as something he was incredibly excited about. His comments suggest that the biggest question for him now isn’t how many Spider-Man movies he can make, but whether the next one is actually worth making.

“I signed a six-picture deal. I was 18 years old. I was more excited than I’d ever been about anything ever.” But the excitement came with a level of control that Holland says lasted for years. He explained that he spent roughly a decade working according to the demands of Marvel and Sony.
“And for the last 10 years, I have been at the beck and call of Marvel and Sony. I’m now at a juncture where I can say no.” That newfound freedom appears to be both exciting and difficult. After spending so much of his career following studio plans, Holland says having the power to reject something has forced him to rethink what he actually wants.
Holland Doesn’t Want To Make Spider-Man Just For The Sake Of It

Holland also revealed that he’s now willing to push back when he believes something isn’t right. That’s particularly important with Spider-Man, a character who has become the defining role of his career. “It means I’ve had to put my foot down in certain instances, which I haven’t been allowed to do in the past.”

For Holland, the priority isn’t simply protecting his own career. He also wants to make sure Peter Parker’s story is being handled properly. And perhaps his most revealing comment was his refusal to continue Spider-Man simply because another sequel can make money.
“I don’t want to make another movie for the sake of making it.” Honestly, that may be exactly the mindset he needs. Holland has played Peter Parker for nearly a decade. If he wants to keep going, the next chapter needs to give him a reason, not just another contract.
