‘Deadpool & Wolverine‘ is one of the most highly anticipated comic book team-ups of 2024. Stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, along with director Shawn Levy, recently sat down with Collider to discuss the new film and provided some intriguing behind-the-scenes details.
Levy revealed in the interview that the movie went through many iterations before choosing Emma Corrin as villain Cassandra Nova. According to Levy, there was one potential villain they “flirted with” for a time and that was Mephisto.
Mephisto is a demonic villain in Marvel comics known for manipulating souls and challenging hell. While he didn’t ultimately make the cut, it’s fascinating to imagine what the movie could have been like had they gone that route and this is what Levy explained as the reason for the change in decision.
Mephisto Could Have Had His Moment In ‘Deadpool And Wolverine’
Levy went into more specifics about Mephisto’s potential involvement while speaking to Collider. “That was who it was. We went through a lot of ‘almost’ versions of this story before we landed” Levy explained. “Frankly, it was the infamous call from Hugh, but then it was this idea of Cassandra Nova as a sibling to Charles because Cassandra’s link to Professor X creates an interesting dynamic”
Reynolds chimed in, praising “the imagery in the comics of Cassandra with her hands in someone’s skull” Ultimately, they felt Cassandra Nova was the right villain for the story they wanted to tell with her ties to Professor X. It’s always interesting to hear about alternative ideas that were considered but ultimately not used.

Levy echoed similar sentiments, noting they had a “blast” on set and felt it was “so creatively fulfilling“.
