Nebula‘s journey in the MCU is one of the most tragic, and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ makes it even sadder when you consider what she has gone through. Nebula was essentially a discarded experiment by Thanos before she joined the Guardians.

Every time she lost a training bout with Gamora, he would take her body parts and replace them with machinery. It began as abuse and eventually turned into a full-body metamorphosis. Her body was a testament to all the times she was told she wasn’t good enough.

Nebula’s hatred towards Gamora was never just a matter of sibling rivalry. Thanos intentionally set up that competition, constantly undermining Nebula and boosting Gamora. That’s why their battle on Titan is so painful. When Nebula turns against Thanos, she isn’t simply choosing the heroes over the villain.

She’s finally facing the one who told her she was worthless since she was a child. There’s something sad about the fact that Thanos’s evil was almost successful. For years, Nebula had thought that she was only valuable if she was useful.

Her body was changed because she wasn’t strong enough. Her friendship with Gamora was severed due to her lack of goodness. Failure was woven into her sense of self. That’s why her transformation in the later part of the story is significant.

In ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’, Nebula finally has a life that isn’t centered around surviving Thanos. On Knowhere, she is a leader. She protects the community and is responsible for the children that have been rescued from the High Evolutionary.

And that’s where her character arc becomes surprisingly beautiful. The same hands that were once used for violence are now used to build a home. The woman who was created to fight is finally learning how to protect.

Nebula doesn’t forget all that has happened to her out of the blue. She just doesn’t let the cruelty of Thanos stop her from becoming what she can. She was built as a weapon. But ‘Guardians 3’ finally lets her discover that she can be a person.
