Chris Columbus is associated with some of Hollywood’s most memorable child performances, from ‘Home Alone’ to the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise. But his experience working with Macaulay Culkin taught him a lesson that fundamentally changed the way he approached casting young actors.

Years later, while speaking with Demi Lovato for her documentary ‘Child Star’, Columbus revealed the connection between ‘Home Alone’ and ‘Harry Potter’ and how finding the right parent is just as important as finding the right child star.

When Chris Columbus was making ‘Home Alone’, he found the perfect actor to play his star lead, Kevin McCallister, in Macaulay Culkin. Though he admitted that he did not know much about the young actor’s family life when filming began.

Speaking to Demi Lovato in ‘Child Star’, he revealed, “As we were shooting, we learned a little more. The stories are hair-raising. I was casting a kid who truly had a troubled family life.”

Even Culkin’s rise to fame was much faster than Columbus had anticipated. ‘Home Alone’ brought a level of attention and pressure to the young actor that no one could have predicted. Columbus, who himself came from a working-class family, understood how complicated it could become when a child suddenly became the family’s primary breadwinner.

This experience changed the way Columbus thought about working with children. He realised that casting a talented young performer was only a part of the responsibility. The environment that a child stays in is crucial as well.

“Suddenly, I realised that parents had to be a big part of it,” Columbus explained. “I can’t have [an actor] go home to a really sort of shaky environment for the sake of a film. It’s not worth it. It was as important to cast the parents as it was to cast the kids.”

This lesson stayed with Columbus when he was handed an even bigger casting challenge: finding the young actors who would carry the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise.

Casting ‘Harry Potter’ Came With Its Own Set Of Challenges

By the time Columbus began casting for ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, the situation was completely different. Unlike ‘Home Alone’, where Culkin’s fame came later, the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise was already very big.

Columbus recalled feeling the pressure everywhere he went. The casting had become a global conversation, with people constantly asking who would play the famous wizard.

“I had to put blinders on because that’s all I was hearing everywhere. You go on the street, you go into a pub, you go anywhere, and people are saying, ‘Who are you gonna cast? Who’s gonna be Harry Potter, who’s gonna be Harry Potter?’” He revealed.

Rather than allowing the outside pressure to dictate his choice, Columbus decided to focus on preparing the young actors and their families for what was coming. He felt a “tremendous responsibility” to make sure they knew what they were signing up for. It could define their childhood and become a permanent part of their public identity.

“That’s the rest of your life as a child star,” Columbus told Lovato. “That’s gonna be your legacy, and you have to learn how to live with that.”
