X-Men Didn’t Get Comic-Accurate Suits Because Of ‘The Matrix’. Here’s Why

The ‘X-Men’ movies have always been considered iconic and fierce, especially when it came to their wardrobe. Though completely differing from their official costumes in the comics, it is safe to say that the black leather was not an arbitrary decision in the movies.

Although the new ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ movie is following the original costume from the comics for Wolverine, Kevin Feige recently revealed why it wasn’t followed in the initial ‘X-Men’ movies.

The initial 2000s were a big time for superhero fans with X-Men marking a justifiable success with its thrilling movies over the years. Fans were quite pleased seeing the movies on the big screen but noticed one differing factor from the comics: their costumes.

While in the comics, X-Men have a similar blue and mustard-colored attire with a collective “X” with obvious moderations for each character, in the movies they seemed to be wearing black leather instead.

Talking at the global press conference for Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige who was an associate producer on ‘X-Men’, revealed the real reason for the black leather.

“There were studio execs in charge, who knew that The Matrix had been a big hit and The Matrix had black leather, so let’s put them in black leather,” Feige confirmed, answering a question fans have been asking for two whole decades now.

Though the look was incentivized by a 1999 Sci-Fi Blockbuster, it still received a set of mixed reactions throughout the years. Many fans were upset over its “boring” or “bland” nature.

The Marvel Studios have accepted this fate and have started playing along to its mockery. Marvel Studio’s animated series, ‘X-Men’97’, has already taken aim at the 2000 movie. In one episode, Cable is seen questioning Cyclops over his brightly colored uniform, and receives the curt reply: “What did you expect? Black Leather?”

As the times have changed, fans are excited to react to the comically original outfit of Wolverine being shown for the first time in the upcoming movie ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’.

While discussing this, Kevin Feige mentioned in a recent interview, “Hugh Jackman having never appeared in the character’s most iconic suit is like being Superman in 10 movies and never wearing the Superman costume. It’s a testament to Wolverine that it didn’t necessarily matter; the character is more than the costume.”

“When I realized Hugh was in, I went from studio mode to ‘You know you gotta get in the yellow outfit, right?'” he recalled.
