Remakes are not a new concept in the film industry. It is a trend that has been common in Hollywood since the journey started hundreds of years ago. There are films that have been successful at the box office while others turned out to be failures, only to later gain recognition as cult classics. However, when these projects were remade several years later, they failed to receive the response they got initially.

1. Swept Away (2002)
Guy Ritchie decided to direct the remake of the 1974 Italian film, ‘Swept Away.’ It received negative reviews with a score of 5% on Rotten Tomatoes with the site claiming that Madonna does not have any acting skills.
2. Bewitched (2005)
Released in 2005, ‘Bewitched’ tried to bring back the flavor of the original show that aired during the 60s. However, the attempt failed to impress the audience and turned out to be a box office failure.
3. Fantastic Four (2015)
While Marvel Studios have delivered the best projects, the 2015 reboot of ‘Fantastic Four’ is considered to be the worst on their list. The film was criticized in all the departments starting from acting, character development, and more. It was so bad that a planned sequel was canceled.
4. Footloose (2011)
The 2011 remake of ‘Footloose‘ was a box office success and was rated 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. But it was still criticized by a few for lacking the emotional impact which was felt in the 1984 film.
5. Jacob’s Ladder (2019)
‘Jacob’s Ladder’ was released in 2019 with high expectations but it was heavily criticized for not handling the themes properly. There was a huge difference as the original was rated 72% on Rotten Tomatoes whereas the remake got only 4%.

6. Annie (2014)
‘Annie’ grossed $133 million at the box office despite receiving negative reviews. The major criticism was towards the soundtrack as auto-tune was frequently used in it. The film starred Jamie Foxx, Quvenzhane Wallis, Rose Byrne and Cameron Diaz.
7. The Wicker Man (2006)
‘The Wicker Man’ featured Nicolas Cage in the lead but it was not enough to make the film successful. A few critics also described it to be a funny film instead of a horror film. The original one was so good that it was described as one of the best horror films by different publications.
8. The Mummy (2017)
‘The Mummy’ was released with a lot of expectations considering that it had Tom Cruise in the lead. But it failed to repeat the success of the original trilogy featuring Brendan Fraser. Universal Pictures was planning to launch Dark Universe focusing on their classic monsters but the franchise was shut down when ‘The Mummy‘ bombed at the box office.
9. Overboard (2018)
It must be noted that the original 1987 film received mixed reviews and bombed at the box office. But the remake received a negative response, with critics saying that it lacked the elements which made the original film a bit better than the remake.
10. Psycho (1998)
‘Psycho’ was a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 film which became a cult classic. Although Anne Heche was praised for her performance, the film received negative reviews for mishandling the themes of the original film.
