Before Mickey Mouse, Winnie The Pooh was given a horror makeover. When our loveable bear entered the public domain, he was turned into an R-rated horror film, ‘Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey’, last year. As the clock struck midnight for 2024, it began with the news of another childhood favorite character getting a horror movie treatment.
Now, the famous 1928 version of Mickey Mouse will go through the same transformation. The film is set to be directed by Steven LaMorte. The sadistic mouse is set to torment a group of unsuspecting ferry passengers.

Steamboat Willie Is Set To Make A Horror Debut
Previously Steven LaMorte directed the horror parody of the Grinch, ‘The Mean One’. And now LaMorte is going for ‘Steamboat Willie’, the original Micky Mouse. In a press release, the director said, “Steamboat Willie has brought joy to generations, but beneath that cheerful exterior lies a potential for pure, unhinged terror. It’s a project I’ve been dreaming of, and I can’t wait to unleash this twisted take on this beloved character to the world.”
Not only ‘Steamboat Willie’ will feature a horrific version of Micky Mouse, but recently a trailer for ‘Mickey’s Mouse Trap’ directed by Jamie Bailey dropped on Monday. This other horror-comedy is set in an amusement arcade. The story revolves around a young woman who throws a surprise birthday party in an amusement arcade, but things quickly take a turn for the worse when she and her friends encounter a knife-wielding murderer in a Mickey costume. The filmmakers said they don’t have a release date yet, but fans can expect it to be released in March.

Disney Still Has A Hold Over Mickey Mouse Rights
On Monday, Disney’s copyright to ‘Steamboat Willlie‘ expired along with the right to the original versions of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. However, Disney is not entirely giving up, as it will defend its trademarks. This means that the company could sue over any perceived endorsement or affiliation with its brand.
The Mouse company released a statement last month stating, “We will, of course, continue to protect our rights in the more modern versions of Mickey Mouse and other works that remain subject to copyright, and we will work to safeguard against consumer confusion caused by unauthorized uses of Mickey and our other iconic characters.”
