The summer of 2023 will witness one of the biggest Julys in recent times. There are three big-budget films set to release in the same month, giving the cinephiles variety to enjoy from. The first release is Tom Cruise’s ‘Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One.’ After that, Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ and Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ are all set for a box office clash.
‘Barbie’ stars Margot Robbie as the titular character and Ryan Gosling as Ken. It is a story of Barbie having an existential crisis and leaving the lavish world that she inhabits into the real world. Ken accompanies her on her journey into the real world. Whereas, ‘Oppenheimer’ follows the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the nuclear scientist who carried the first detonation of nuclear weapons. The box office pundits have predicted that the Margot Robbie-starrer will have the biggest opening day.

The Actress Wanted Diversity In The Barbies To Come On Board
It will be an interesting spectacle to see Margot Robbie’s mainstream appeal amalgamating with Greta Gerwig’s indie sensibilities. Along with Margot, actresses like Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Ritu Arya, and others are playing various Barbies. It was only possible because ‘The Suicide Squad’ actress put her foot down to have diversity.
During an interview with Time magazine, Margot Robbie told Mattel’s chief executive, Ynon Kreiz, to consider a few things. She said, “In that very first meeting, we impressed upon Ynon we are going to honor the legacy of your brand, but if we don’t acknowledge certain things—if we don’t say it, someone else is going to say it. So you might as well be a part of that conversation.”
She added, “If (Mattel) hadn’t made that change to have a multiplicity of Barbies, I don’t think I would have wanted to attempt to make a Barbie film. I don’t think you should say, ‘This is the one version of what Barbie is, and that’s what women should aspire to be and look like and act like.’ “
