He is the swaggering, drunken, strangely brilliant pirate who defined a generation of adventure films. But the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow, loved by millions, almost ended up as a very different kind of hero. Before Johnny Depp’s unusual performance made history, the role was not just a possibility for Hugh Jackman; it was written for him.

The story comes straight from the franchise’s creator, screenwriter Stuart Beattie. In a surprising piece of Hollywood history, Beattie has said that he imagined the character with the Australian actor in mind. He even named him “Jack” as a direct nod to the future Wolverine.

Beattie explained in interviews, “I initially wrote that character with Hugh Jackman in mind. Hence the name, Captain Jack Sparrow.” Beattie’s idea for Sparrow did not come from nowhere. It came from seeing Jackman perform in musicals back in Australia. Beattie saw the “phenomenal talent” and “roguish charm” that he thought would be perfect for a charismatic outlaw.

The script, first called Quest for the Caribbean, spent ten long years being pitched to Disney. The studio did not find it interesting until they decided to turn their theme park rides into movies. But by the time the project finally moved forward, things had changed. Hugh Jackman had made a name for himself with X-Men, but he was not yet the huge global star he is today.

For a studio taking a chance on a risky film based on a ride, Jackman’s name did not have the star power they wanted. Disney executives decided against casting him and passed over the writer’s original choice. The role went to Johnny Depp, who took Beattie’s basic idea of an “outlaw with a dash of mischief” and turned it into something completely unexpected.

Depp’s version, inspired by rock legend Keith Richards and filled with a confusing, drunken swagger, first confused Disney executives. They openly questioned what he was doing. The Disney chief at the time, Michael Eisner, reportedly thought Sparrow would “ruin the movie.” But instead, Depp’s strange creation became an instant classic and made the franchise a hit.

While Depp became known as Captain Jack, the story of Jackman coming so close to the role is a fascinating “what if” of Hollywood. Jackman later said he was “grateful” things turned out the way they did. “I was very flattered because I think I had the accent that would have worked,” he said on The Graham Norton Show. “But I think Johnny Depp is one of the great movie stars, and he was so brilliant in that role.

The strange part is that while Jackman never sailed as a pirate, a small piece of him will always be on board the Black Pearl.
