As Dakota Johnson spoke to IndieWire about the making of ‘Daddio‘, the interviewer discussed Sean Penn’s comment asserting how unacceptable the film would have been if it were written by a man. In response, Dakota said she agrees with her co-actor.

“I agree with that. There is a tenderness behind both characters, but behind Sean’s character, specifically, I think a woman having written that character and directed that character somehow makes it, in this world today, permissible rather than cancelable because, you know, toxic masculinity, etc,” she said.

Talking about what it was like making the film, the actress said, “This is, it’s just such a gem of a project. It was unlike anything I had ever read. It’s obviously not a normal movie. Of course, there are films that it is inspired by.”

There’s that amazing movie ‘Locke’ that takes place inside of a car, and ‘My Dinner with Andre,’ movies that are reminiscent of a very contained experience of performance. Production-wise, it was challenging, and so that was inspiring and enticing, and it just did stuff to my heart that I was like, ‘I have to make this movie,’” she added.

Christy Hall’s directorial debut film ‘Daddio‘ features Dakota Johnson in the lead role. Co-starring with Johnson is Sean Penn as an old-guard New Yorker and lone wolf cab driver who picks up her character, Girlie at JFK.

They have a heart-to-heart conversation about life, love, sex, relationships, and other topics as they travel back to Brooklyn. Throughout the whole cab trip, Penn’s character speaks candidly and frequently harshly about sex and his previous relationships.

The movie had its debut on September, 2023, at the 50th Telluride Film Festival. It also had a special screening program the same month at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023.

The film is set to release on June 28.
