Fede Alvarez Explains The Strange Connection Between Isabela Merced’s ‘Alien: Romulus’ Character And ‘The Last of Us’

Diving deep into the ‘Alien: Romulus‘ hype, we already know that Director Fede Alvarez isn’t one to shy away from pushing the boundaries. And when you combine his vision with the talent of Isabela Merced, well, you’ve got a recipe for something truly mind-blowing.

Merced’s character in ‘Alien: Romulus‘ is making waves all over the world for one of the most intense scenes in ‘Alien‘ franchise. And the exciting part is her ‘Romulus‘ character has a strange and eerie connection to her upcoming HBO’s ‘The Last of Us‘ Season 2.

Here’s where things get really interesting. As Fede Alvarez himself revealed, he cast Isabela Merced as Kay long before anyone knew she’d be stepping into the shoes of Dina in ‘The Last of Us‘ Season 2. Dina, a fan-favorite from ‘The Last of Us Part II‘ video game, is pregnant.

Fun fact: I was playing [The Last of Us Part II] while writing [Alien: Romulus]. The story of a pregnant Dina made me think of having the character of Kay be pregnant too. Then I cast Isabella Merced to play Kay…. A year later she gets cast to play Dina on the HBO show…. True story,” Alvarez shared in a post on X.

Merced didn’t hold back when she described her big scene in ‘Romulus‘ — and “disgusting” was putting it lightly. “There’s a scene that I’m in, and they all had to turn away. Not one person stayed looking at that iPad because it was so disgusting,” Merced revealed to THR. Now, we’re not saying we’re looking forward to cringing in our seats, but isn’t that exactly what we want from an ‘Alien’ movie?

As for her role in ‘The Last of Us‘, Merced is just as excited about bringing Dina to life. Dina, who is a beacon of hope for Ellie in the bleak, post-apocalyptic world, shares some striking similarities with Merced herself.

[Dina is] sort of a light in Ellie’s life, in Ellie’s world. I think that’s the general consensus, because you look at the video game, too, and she is really the only one who actually gets sort of a decent ending,” Merced revealed to Total Film.

I love, more than anything, to be that light for the people in my life. And I like to make them laugh, and I like to make them understand themselves more. I just like to help in general. I think Dina’s very close to my own personality. I think we’re both very silly, and I think I would maybe handle the apocalypse in a similar way if I were in it.”

Alien: Romulus‘ is currently playing in movie theaters.
