Florence Pugh Explains Why She Refused To Wear A Bald Cap And Insisted On Shaving Her Head For ‘We Live In Time’

Florence Pugh does not shy away from making bold moves. Last year, the Oppenheimer actor stunned everyone on the red carpet of the Met Gala sporting a buzzcut look. Many brewed theories and even assumed that she was “taking back her identity”. However, Pugh revealed that she had shaved her head for her role in John Crowley’s ‘We Live In Time’. Pugh pairs with Andrew Garfield for the first time in this romantic comedy.

‘We Live In Time’ is a major shift from her usual roles. She recently starred as Princess Irulan in the sci-fi film, ‘Dune: Part 2’. Pugh and Garfield play Almut and Tobias and the movie will premiere at the Toronto International Fim Festival on 6 September 2024.

‘We Live In Time’ is director John Crawley’s attempt to create another beautiful English romance. However, the film’s atmosphere dampens when Almut, played by Pugh, is diagnosed with cancer. Talking with Vanity Fair, Pugh related that Crawley discussed bald caps and other hair accessory options with the actor to avoid shaving her head.

However, the ‘Little Women’ actor stopped Crawley mid-sentence and spoke her mind, “John, no one can play a character like this in a movie like this and not do the thing that is needed to be done. And if you don’t want to do it, I believe that you shouldn’t be doing a story like this.”

The film is scheduled to be released in cinemas next year. ‘We Live In Time’ does not follow a chronological pattern. The focus of the plot jumps from one timeline to another covering a lifetime of romance between Almut and Tobias.

Pugh is known for doing novel roles. However, she was drawn by the simple yet moving script of ‘We Live In Time’. She stated, “Especially as Brits, we grow up with the quirkiest and most beautiful of love stories. And I think it’s been a long time since we’ve had one of those.”

She continued, “When I read it, I just fell in love with the idea of getting to be in one of those movies that will matter to a lot of people, and will live for a long time. And it’s about the simplest of things, which is that we are here, I personally believe, for one reason only: to love and be loved.”

Pugh also related that Almut’s character was a welcoming break from her usual atypical roles. “I think this came at the right time in my life. I got to play a very, very normal woman who is talented in her own ways. The story is about the powerful love, and the powerful connection, between two people,” she said.
