Ever since Robert Downey Jr. set foot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he changed the entire course of the superhero franchise. From the fans to the industry, everyone has credited the actor for turning the MCU into reality. Playing the same role for almost a decade did raise concerns about his acting abilities.
However, the 2023 ‘Oppenheimer‘ film brought Christopher Nolan and Robert Downey Jr. together. During multiple interviews, Nolan confessed that he always wanted to work with the ‘Iron Man’ star as well and commended his casting in the superhero role.
Christopher Nolan Calls Robert Downey Jr. As Iron Man A Consequential Decision
In an interview with The New York Times Magazine last year, Robert Downey Jr. admitted he was concerned his acting might be at risk while playing Iron Man for 11 years in the MCU.
Christopher Nolan believed the same and further added, “I’ve always wanted to work with him. I’ve always seen that in his work. And he has such charisma as Tony Stark. Him playing Iron Man is one of the most consequential casting decisions that’s ever been made in the history of the movie business. I wanted to give him the opportunity to lose himself in a part, lose himself in another human being the way great actors love him.”

Christopher Nolan Admires Robert Downey Jr.’s Dedication Towards His Work
The renowned director recently made an appearance on ‘The Late Show‘ hosted by Stephen Colbert. The duo, especially Christopher Nolan spoke highly of Robert Downey Jr., who is considered the Oscar frontrunner for his impressionable role as Lewis Strauss in the category for the best supporting actor. Nolan confessed that he has always wanted to work with Downey because of his “generosity” and “charisma.”
During the conversation, Nolan also shed light upon the ‘Sherlock Homes‘ star’s personality saying, “With anybody you work with, with actors…you’re looking for some kind of connection emotionally, empathetically. You’re looking for some kind of generosity. He has this incredible generosity of spirit. It means when he’s in a scene with other people he’s making sure they are all doing their best, that they are all able to bring their best to the table. He’s helping them clarify those emotional connections.”
