Ian McKellan Claims ‘Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum’ Will Be Two Movies

Ian McKellan is set to reprise his iconic role as Gandalf in the upcoming ‘Lord Of The Rings‘ spin-off ‘The Hunt For Gollum‘. In a recent interview, the legendary actor revealed that he has been informed the Andy Serkis-directed movie will not be a standalone film, but a two-part story. 

McKellan first played the wizard Gandalf in Peter Jackson’s acclaimed ‘Lord of the Rings‘ film trilogy. fans were excited to learn he may return for ‘The Hunt For Gollum‘. However, his latest comments have suggested the prequel’s scope will be much larger than anticipated. While details are still under wraps, McKellan did provide an early indication of what fans can expect from the continuation of the epic fantasy franchise.

Ian McKellan Was Told ‘Hunt For Gollum’ Will Span Across Two Movies

While speaking to British morning show This Morning, McKellan shared that he has been told ‘The Hunt For Gollum‘ will be split into two movies. “I’m told it’s two films. I probably shouldn’t be saying that, but I haven’t read the script, and I don’t know when it is, and I don’t even know where it’ll be filmed” the actor said. Though uncertain if he was giving away information prematurely, McKellan seemed confident in what he had been informed about the project’s new two-part format.

Despite not having access to any scripts or knowing the production timeline, McKellan expressed optimism about returning as Gandalf. Not much is currently known about the actual plot of ‘The Hunt For Gollum‘. It will focus on the years when Gollum first came into possession of the One Ring and was being hunted by Aragorn’s ancestors. With so much mystery clouding Gollum’s past, dividing the story into two films could allow more time to explore the rich lore of Middle Earth in this untold period.
