Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated movie ‘Barbie‘ is going to be released soon. Fans are super excited about the movie. However, a new debate has started with the question of whether the movie is a feminist one or not.
Since the beginning, Barbie has been facing the fire of not standing as a feminist symbol. The toy has faced criticism often for upholding a slim figure and proportions that are not healthy for children. But can Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig change their opinion with their movie? Let’s find out!

Is ‘Barbie’ A Feminist Tale?
The movie’s main trailer says, “If you love Barbie, this movie is for you. If you hate Barbie, this movie is for you.” Keeping this in mind, the answer to whether ‘Barbie’ is a feminist movie or not depends on whom you ask. Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie and others who are part of the film think it is. While Mattel, the company responsible for bringing Barbie Dolls to the public says it isn’t.
Well, we think that ‘Barbie’ is definitely a feminist movie. The trailer of the movie shows us how Greta Gerwig carefully and meticulously wove a band of sarcasm. The synopsis of the movie talks about Barbie losing her perfectly designed doll life in Barbie Land and going on a self-discovery journey in the real world.
This very much aligns with the view of breaking free from a preset mentality to which girls are very much subject. Dressing a certain way, having a certain physique, talking, walking and eating a certain way- everything has been decided for women. And like Barbie, many have broken that barrier. So we do feel that Barbie is a feminist movie.

What Do Mattel Executives Think?
Despite all fingers pointing towards ‘Barbie’ being a feminist movie, Mattel Executives do not think that. They are sure of the fact that Gerwig’s ‘Barbie‘ is just a fun watch. They have even insisted on the fact that ‘Barbie’ has nothing to do with feminist politics. Given that Mattel plays an almost comical role in the movie itself, their version may be true.
Robbie Brenner, executive producer of Mattel Films is the man behind bringing Barbie on the big screens. And he is certain that ‘Barbie’ is not a feminist film. However, lead Margot Robbie says otherwise. “Who said that?” Robbie told Time when talking about the remarks. “It’s not that it is or it isn’t. It’s a movie. It’s a movie that’s got so much in it… we’re in on the joke. This isn’t a Barbie puff piece.”
So ultimately whether ‘Barbie’ is a feminist film or not will depend on the viewer. How you perceive what Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie have to offer depends on you. So whether Barbie’s all-pink world stands as a symbol of feminism or not can be found on 21 July.
