Kelly Fremon Craig’s sophomore directorial outing is based on a beloved Judy Blume novel, ‘Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret’. In addition to Rachel McAdams it stars Abby Ryder Fortson, Benny Safdie, and Kathy Bates.
American author Judy Blume, who provides the source inspiration for the film, is primarily a writer of young adults novel that significantly shaped adolescent children’s hearts and minds over the years. Often censured by religious and puritanical organizations for dealing with the issues of sexuality and puberty, it was only in 2018 that Judy Blume gave the rights to Kelly Fremon Craig and James L. Brooks.

What Role Does Rachel McAdams Play In The Film?
‘Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret’ is the story of 11-year-old Margaret Simon, a sixth grader who moves with her parents from New York City to the suburbs of Farbrook, New Jersey. Since one of her parents is Christian while the other is Jewish, she goes on a quest to discover her religious identity and deal with approaching puberty.
Rachel McAdams plays Barbara Simon, mother to Margaret Simon (Abby Ryder Fortson). Benny Safdie plays Herb Simon, Margaret’s clumsy dad, and Kathy Baker stars as Margaret’s grandmother Sylvia Simon. As Margaret struggles with the growing pains, Barbara tries to help Margaret amidst the adolescent confusion of changing bodies. Judy Blume has revealed that the cinematic adaptation will differ from her book.
Originally scheduled to be released on September 16, 2022, ‘Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret’ will now play in the theatres on April 28, 2023.
