“I’ve Always Been Like That”: Cillian Murphy Defends Himself After Co-Star Matt Damon Calls Him The “Worst Dinner Companion”

Cillian Murphy has done full justice to his role in the recent blockbuster ‘Oppenheimer‘. The actor is known for his intense commitment to roles. While his recent movie is striding forward by bagging several awards this season, the actor recently opened up about his immersive experience filming it.

The actor was in conversation with ‘60 Minutes‘ host Scott Pelley, who brought up a comment from Murphy’s ‘Oppenheimer‘ co-actor Matt Damon, who described him as the “worst dinner companion imaginable.” Here’s how the ‘Oppenheimer‘ star responded to the allegations.

Cillian Murphy had a hearty conversation with Scott Pelley, wherein 47-year-old ‘Oppenheimer‘ actor discussed the challenges and sacrifices that come with fully embodying a character, especially in a project of such magnitude. Amid the discussion, the host quipped Murphy with a comment made about him by his fellow co-star Matt Damon.

Matt Damon told me that ‘Cillian is the worst dinner companion imaginable,'” Pelley said on the podcast. “What he meant by that was when you’re working on a film — when you’re being the character — there’s very little room in your head for anything else,” he added.

Yeah, I mean, I’ve always been like that, I think,” Murphy said, laughing. “But it’s because, to me, you have the time on set, which is short enough time — you have 10 hours, maybe. And then the other part, if you’ve got a significant part, you’re having to keep your lines fresh,” he said.

And then the other big thing for me is sleeping. I love sleeping and I need sleep,” the actor said.

But Murphy also defended himself stating that he has “had lots of lovely dinners with” Damon “since the movie’s finished and we’ve been out promoting it and stuff.” “At the time, yeah, you just don’t have the room … in your head, and you want as much sleep as possible,” the ‘Peaky Blinders‘ star added.

Oppenheimer‘ was a blockbuster with an ensemble cast including Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, among others. The movie has earned an impressive 13 nominations at the upcoming Oscars, with nods for Best Director for Christopher Nolan and Best Picture.

Robert Downey Jr., who plays Atomic Energy Commission chairman Lewis Strauss in the film, has also commented on Murphy’s commitment to the project. Back in July 2023, Downey expressed admiration for Murphy’s transformative performance.

He knew it was going to be a behemoth ask when Chris called him. But I think he also had the humility that is required to survive playing a role like this,” Downey Jr. said.

We’d be like, ‘Hey, we got a three-day weekend. Maybe we’ll go antiquing in Santa Fe. What are you going to do?’ ‘Oh, I have to learn 30,000 words of Dutch. Have a nice time.’ But that’s the nature of the ask,” he added.
