Jennifer Lawrence and Christian Bale’s ‘American Hustle’ collaboration was more than just another acclaimed pairing. Lawrence has since explained that watching Bale prepare for scenes changed the way she approached acting, especially during a period when she was still relatively young and self-conscious on set.

When Lawrence made American Hustle in 2013, she was only 23 and was already a major star after ‘Winter’s Bone’ and ‘The Hunger Games’. However, despite her success, she admitted that she could feel embarrassed performing in front of a crew.

I was always very sensitive about getting embarrassed in front of the crew. I thought acting was embarrassing, so I’d try not to act until I absolutely had to,” she shared. Her approach was fairly simple: she would essentially switch into acting mode when the cameras were ready. Bale, however, showed her another way.

As the lights were being adjusted and the crew prepared to shoot, Lawrence noticed Bale gradually getting himself into character instead of waiting until the final moment. That small habit apparently stuck with her.

She realized she could use those few seconds before “action” to mentally settle into the scene rather than suddenly forcing herself into character. It sounds like a tiny adjustment, but for an actor, those little rituals can make a huge difference.

‘American Hustle’ reunited Lawrence with David O. Russell after their successful collaboration on Silver Linings Playbook. The movie also put her alongside Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner in an ensemble inspired by the FBI’s ABSCAM operation.

Lawrence’s performance as Rosalyn Rosenfeld became one of the movie’s most memorable elements. She earned an Oscar nomination for Supporting Actress, while the film received 10 Academy Award nominations overall.

Bale, meanwhile, was already known for his extraordinary commitment to transforming himself for roles. His work on ‘American Hustle’ was no exception, with his physical transformation and detailed preparation becoming part of the film’s identity.
