More than three decades after ‘Mrs. Doubtfire‘ hit theatres, Matthew Lawrence still has some pretty special memories of working with Sally Field and Robin Williams.

The actor, who played their on-screen son in the 1993 comedy, recently opened up about the bond he shared with his co-stars. It turns out the family connection wasn’t just for the cameras. Lawrence revealed how Field became a mother figure to him and why the experience remains so special even today.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Lawrence looked back on filming ‘Mrs. Doubtfire‘ alongside Field, Williams, and Pierce Brosnan. “We really became a family unit on that set,” he recalled. Interestingly, the actors began building their connection even before rehearsals started.

The cast spent time getting to know one another, which helped them develop a genuine family-like bond. Lawrence explained that Field “so [Field] kind of really became another mother figure.” Considering he was only 12 years old at the time, having that kind of support clearly meant a lot to him.

And Lawrence had nothing but lovely things to say about his on-screen mother. He described Field as “so sweet” and added, “She was so caring, so kind. I don’t know how anybody could say anything bad about the lady… She was great.” Clearly, the actress left quite an impression on her young co-star.

However, Field wasn’t the only actor who made Lawrence feel comfortable. He also praised Williams and Brosnan for treating him like a child actor. According to Lawrence, the three stars “neither treated me and talked down to me as a child, nor did they overexpose me to the adult world.”

Instead, they managed to find the perfect balance between respecting him as a young performer and protecting his childhood. Lawrence said the actors “walked a line” that was “absolutely wonderful,” making the experience even more memorable.

Looking back, he called filming the movie “one of those incredible, once-in-a-lifetime experiences.” And while he appreciated everyone involved, Field clearly held a special place in his heart. As Lawrence put it, “Sally in particular… she was amazing.”
