Matthew Lillard gained a great deal of attention for the role of Stu Macher in ‘Scream‘. His performance in the movie was filled with many memorable lines and his twisted charisma added to the blend of dark comedy and horror the viewers saw on the screen.
Although Lillard’s character was stabbed multiple times before having a TV set dropped on his head, the actor believes Stu is still alive. After all, ‘Scream’ has brought back seemingly dead characters earlier. Lillard broke his silence on reprising the character and his feelings about ‘Scream 7‘.
Matthew Lillard Will Not Return To the ‘Scream’ Franchise Anytime Soon
Speaking with GameSpot at the 2024 New York Comic Con, Matthew Lillard addressed whether he would return to his iconic ‘Scream‘ role. “I’m glad you asked because I’ve been waiting to break this news,” he joked, indicating he’ll be Neve Campbell’s understudy. “I am. I’ve been working on my girlish figure.” And, that his beard “comes next.”
After playing around a bit, Lillard confirmed that he’s not in the seventh installment. “Until the day it came out, I would just lie to you,” the actor gave the cryptic response.

Talking about the injuries his character endured, Lillard further played around and said, “I’ll be like a superhero, like a Marvel superhero, but I’ll be Stu, roided out and full of rage”. However, there’s no confirmation that he will play Stu again or not. Moreover, he has another horror movie in his hands – the popular video game adaptation, ‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’ sequel.
Other Cast Members Of ‘Scream 7’
The franchise is moving forward with a refurbished cast. There were a lot of controversies surrounding ‘Scream 7‘ with many actors exiting the film. Melissa Barrera, who portrayed Sam Carpenter was fired due to her social media posts about the Israel-Hamas war. Jenna Ortega, who played Barrera’s onscreen sister Tara Carpenter, also opted out due to her packed schedule. Neve Campbell, who was introduced in the original film didn’t return for the sixth installment. But, she will once again play Sidney Prescott in the upcoming ‘Scream‘ entry.
Moreover, Courtney Cox is also in talks to reprise her role as journalist Gale Weathers. Cox has been constant in all the six films and she’s also a major part of the franchise.

They also killed a fan-favorite character Dewy, played by David Arquette and Cox noted that they should find a way to bring him back. Cox said, “I understand the reasons they did it, but whoa! Talk about a missed character. Dewey is so loved by Scream fans. They have to figure it out.” Although she’s not in charge of the casting of the movie, she can only hope for the best.
Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original 1996 movie, is in the director’s seat for ‘Scream 7’ which is set to hit theatres on February 27, 2026.
