‘MaXXXine’: Plot, Cast, Release Date Of The ‘X’ Sequel

The year 2022 witnessed many crowd-pleasing slasher films. Some of them, like the classic ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ and ‘Megan’ stood out. However, Ti West brought us a homage to slasher films with his two directorial features, ‘X’, and a prequel to the film, ‘Pearl.’ Now, West is all set to conclude the trilogy with the third installment, ‘MaXXXine.’

Ti West started the ‘X’ universe in 2022. West was testing the waters with this slasher, which starred Mia Goth, Kid Cudi, and Jenna Ortega in the lead cast. It is about how a pornography film lands the characters in a blood-filled escape from the quaint town of Texas. The film was followed by its prequel, ‘Pearl.’ It followed the story of young Pearl, the one who kills Mia Goth’s friends with her husband. Before the screening of ‘Pearl’ at TIFF, A24 announced the third installment in the series.

After the events of ‘X’, which were set in the 1970s, Mia Goth’s Maxine is the only one that comes out of the gory massacre. Following the aftermath of the events, Ti West is bringing the final chapter to the story of the franchise. As per the synopsis,“The film follows Maxine, after the events of X, as the sole survivor who continues her journey towards fame setting out to make it as an actress in 1980’s Los Angeles.”

Mia Goth will reprise her character, Maxine. Besides the British actress, the cast includes Lily Collins, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Kevin Bacon, Halsey, and Giancarlo Esposito. The film will go on floors in April 2023, so it may have a release date in 2024.

The team has kept any character details under wraps, but The Hollywood Reporter writes that “Esposito plays an agent for adult film and Z-list movie actors while Debicki is a film director. Monaghan and Cannavale are LAPD detectives while Bacon is a private detective.” Ti West will don his writer’s and director’s hat for the sequel. A24, along with Jacob Jaffke, Ti West, Kevin Turen, and Harrison Kreiss, will produce the film.

During an interview with Blood Disgusting, Ti West told the fans what they can expect from ‘MaXXXine.’ He said, “I’m not going to tell you what it’s about, but what’s fun is it is an evolution of the character, in the way that you met Pearl in X, but then you get to know a different side of her in Pearl.”

West continued, “Yes, you have met Maxine. It is a continuation of Maxine, but she is at a very different point in her life. It’s going to be an interesting thing to catch up with her when we do, and to see Mia Goth in yet another way.”

The slasher genre, once limited to Halloween, has become ubiquitous throughout the year. It is all thanks to Ti West for being one of the reviving figures. Ti West credited A24 for providing flexibility and space to film both ‘X’ and ‘Pearl’ simultaneously. Martin Scorsese also praised the film.

In the same interview with Bloody Disgusting during the promotion of ‘Pearl,’ Ti said, “We would’ve never made this movie. That was part of it. It was like if we go home, this script is nothing. I knew that when we wrote it. I knew that it was completely a gamble to do this back-to-back, or it was a writing exercise, and that’s all it would be because it wouldn’t make sense. The movie’s budget would be enormous to recreate all this stuff.”

He continued, “It was really a movie that was birthed out of one of the most unique timing scenarios ever. But because of that, I knew that we could, because of all the amortization of everything we had already put together with X, I just knew that there was a way to make a movie that looked a lot bigger than it was and to give a scope and an identity that would feel, not like a bonus movie, but a second completely different, fully realized story.”
