Awards can be a surprisingly ambiguous way to judge how good a movie really is, and these movies prove exactly that. While a film can impress the Oscar critics, it can also become the target for the Golden Raspberry Awards.
From acclaimed movies to huge blockbusters, here are 10 movies that were nominated for both Oscars and Razzies at the same time.
10. Wall Street (1987)
Oliver Stone’s ‘Wall Street’ has become a cult classic today for its sharp critique of financial culture. The movie introduced Michael Douglas in the role of ruthless financier Gordon Gekko, who won an Academy Award for Best Actor.
The same couldn’t be said for Daryl Hannah, who played Gekko’s love interest, Darien Taylor. The Razzies awarded her Worst Supporting Actress, which makes ‘Wall Street’ the only movie in history to win both a Razzie and an Oscar.

9. Con Air (1997)
Even though it is a silly action film, ‘Con Air’ is surprisingly very entertaining. On top of it, it is led by a star-studded cast including Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, and John Malkovich. The Academy decided to nominate Trisha Yearwood’s performance of “How Do I Live” in the film for Best Original Song at the Oscars. The film was also nominated for Best Sound.
But the song became a point of contention when the Razzie nominated it for Worst Original Song, the exact opposite category. Neither side ultimately won. But ‘Con Air’ did take home the Razzie for Worst Reckless Disregard for Human Life and Public Property.
8. The Last Temptation Of Christ (1988)
Even one of Hollywood’s most respected directors couldn’t help but get caught between both critical acclaim and ridicule with ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’. The movie itself was pretty controversial, but it earned Martin Scorsese an Academy Award nomination for Best Director.
However, it didn’t escape criticism. Harvey Keitel’s portrayal of Judas Iscariot, which was already receiving plenty of negative attention, earned the actor a Razzie nomination for Worst Supporting Actor.
7. Yentl (1983)
Barbara Streisand directed, produced, and starred in ‘Yentl’, which is now considered one of the greatest musical films of all time. The movie made Streisand the first woman to win Best Director at the Golden Globes. It also did exceptionally well at the Academy Awards, where it was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, Best Art Direction, and Best Original Song, while winning Best Original Score.
But ‘Yentl’ didn’t sit quite well with Razzie voters. The movie was nominated for Worst Actor, Worst Supporting Actress, and Worst Musical Score, though it ultimately didn’t win in any of the categories.
6. Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)
Before the controversy over the ‘Star Wars’ sequel trilogy started on the internet, ‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace’ had already sparked plenty of debate during awards season. The movie earned three Academy Award nominations for Best Sound Effects Editing, Best Visual Effects, and Best Sound.
Nevertheless, this didn’t save it from the Razzies, where it received seven nominations altogether, including Worst Picture, Worst Director, and Worst Screenplay. Jake Lloyd, who played Anakin, and Sofia Coppola, who played Saché, were both nominated for Worst Supporting Actor and Actress, respectively. Jake Lloyd and Natalie Portman were also nominated for Worst Screen Couple, while Ahmed Best won Worst Supporting Actor.

5. Pearl Harbor (2001)
Michael Bay is no stranger when it comes to the Razzies. But with ‘Pearl Harbor’, he managed to earn four Oscar nominations, including Best Original Song, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects, ultimately winning for Best Sound Editing.
Unfortunately, the Razzies had a very different opinion. Michael Bay found himself nominated for Worst Director and Ben Affleck for Worst Actor, along with Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay, Worst Screen Couple, and Worst Remake or Sequel.
4. Armageddon (1998)
Another Michael Bay blockbuster that found itself caught between Oscar and Razzies is ‘Armageddon’. The Academy recognised the movie’s technical achievements, nominating it for Best Original Song, Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing, as well as Best Visual Effects.
The Razzies nominated the film for Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Supporting Actress, Worst Screen Couple, Worst Original Song and Worst Screenplay, and Bruce Willis even won Worst Actor. Ironically, its song “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” was nominated for both Best and Worst Original Song.
3. Flashdance (1983)
Even one of the most iconic parts of 1980s pop culture got dual attention from the Academy and the Razzies. ‘Flashdance’ earned four Oscar nominations, including Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing and two nominations for Best Original Song.
The Razzies found plenty to complain and nominated the movie for Worst Screenplay. However, this time, we have to hand it to the Academy for recognising how culturally relevant the music of the movie was going to be.
2. Basic Instinct (1992)
Few movies have generated controversy quite like ‘Basic Instinct’. The same happened during the awards season when the Academy nominated the film for Best Film Editing and Best Original Score, recognizing its technical aspect.
However, The Razzies nominated Michael Douglas for Worst Actor, Jeanne Tripplehorn for Worst Supporting Actress and Sharon Stone for Worst New Star.
1. The Godfather Part III (1990)
Francis Ford Coppola’s final chapter in the legendary ‘The Godfather’ series definitely took the awards season by storm. At the Academy Awards, the film received seven nominations in total, including Best Picture and Best Director.
Though the film was a satisfying ending to the franchise, it was Sofia Coppola’s performance that stood out to the Razzies and many viewers at the time as a glaring issue. She was nominated for her performance in both Worst Supporting Actress and Worst New Star.
