Paul Mescal is teaching us all to love ourselves a little more as he made a rather vulnerable revelation about how he absolutely hated this one physical attribute about himself — only for it to become one of the reasons why he bagged a role in the upcoming ‘Gladiator’ film.
Mescal, who gained immense popularity after his role in ‘Normal People’, talked about his latest film, and how it was like working with Pedro Pascal. Here’s how Paul’s nose came in handy while getting him a role in Ridley Scott’s ‘Gladiator II’
Paul Mescal On What Makes Him A Perfect Fit For ‘Gladiator II’
Paul Mescal talked about how his nose became a significant feature for him in the film even though he hated it in the past and also got bullied because of it in school. “My nose just is kind of Roman,” he told Vanity Fair.
“So it’s useful in this context. The nose that I absolutely hated when I was in secondary school—and used to get ribbed for—became very, very useful when Ridley needed somebody to be in Gladiator II,” he added.
Though it wasn’t just his nose — his stellar performance in Sally Rooney’s ‘Normal People‘ also caught Scott’s eyes and he found his perfect Lucius. “When I watch anything, I tend to be clocking who’s interesting,” Ridley Scott said.
“It’s just in my DNA. And so, watching a TV show that’s not really my kind of TV show almost four years ago, I said, ‘Who’s this guy?’” he added, further revealing that he arranged a zoom call and a subsequent meeting with Mescal. “I met with him and he said, ‘Of course, I’d love to do it.’ And that was it. We were away and running with the ball. He was a special find. He was absolutely perfect.”

What Is ‘Gladiator II’ About?
The story centres around how general Marcus Acacius invades the residence of Lucius, the previous heir apparent to the Roman throne, during the joint rule of Caracalla and Geta, turning Lucius into a gladiator. Mescal’s Lucius is related to the first Gladiator through familial ties. As Lucius’s father is Lucilla, Lucius is the grandson of one of the most famous Roman emperors. However, he has spent his childhood apart from Rome because Lucilla sent him to the northern African civilization of Numidia years ago in order to shield him from the growing depravity of Roman culture.
Along with Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger as the twin Roman monarchs Geta and Caracalla, Denzel Washington also has a place in the film. The main characters of course, are Pedro Pascal and Paul Mescal.
The film will hit theatres on November 22nd.
