“Pedo Groomer”: Amy Winehouse’s Biopic ‘Back To Black’ Is Receiving Heat Due To Director Sam Taylor-Johnson

One of the jazz genre’s rising stars, Amy Winehouse, lost her life to addiction and the pressures of fame. The carefree, lucid personality of Amy, which oozed from her music, disappeared behind the fog of heroin and crack. However, in the short span of her life, she left an indelible mark on her musical legacy, which is the subject of Sam Taylor-Johnson’s new film ‘Back To Black’.

‘Back To Black’ puts Amy Winehouse, the renowned soul singer from London, in the spotlight. Marisa Abela stars as Amy. After ‘Nowhere Boy’ and ‘Fifty Shades of Grey,’ Sam Taylor-Johnson is back with a new directorial venture. Still, it is marred with grooming allegations after she married Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

The first official trailer of ‘Back to Black’ is out, and we see the ‘Industry’ actress Marisa Abela take over every frame as Amy Winehouse. The trailer starts with Abela as Amy saying, “I don’t write music to be famous. I write songs because I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t.”

The Sam Taylor-Johnson film’s title is inspired by her 2006 acclaimed album ‘Back to Black.’ The director takes us through the rise of Amy Winehouse and the fame that followed, giving rise to one of the most troubled stars and the relationship that shapes Winehouse. It also stars Jack O’Connell as the infamous husband, Blake Fielder-Civil.

However, the director’s marital controversy has led to a heavy backlash for the film, along with criticism over the selection of the actress and resurrecting the story of an already troubled, deceased pop star. Sam Taylor-Johnson’s debut film ‘Nowhere Boy’ starred Aaron Taylor-Johnson as John Lenon. When the couple fell in love, she was 42, and the rumors were that Aaron was as young as 17.

After the trailer for ‘Back To Black’ was released, the internet quickly pointed out the grooming history of Sam Taylor-Johnson, who dated a man around her daughter Angelica’s age. The power dynamics when the marriage started made the internet fume with her new directorial venture.

Now, it depends upon the merit of ‘Back To Black’ to come out of the shadow of its director’s grooming past and show the story’s potential, as after almost a decade, the fans will see a biopic made on Amy Winehouse.
