Nicole Kidman gave everything she had while filming ‘Practical Magic‘, and one unforgettable scene pushed her to the limit.
More than 25 years after the movie’s release, producer Denise Di Novi has revealed how emotionally demanding the sequence became, sharing that Kidman even “burst a few blood vessels” while bringing the intense moment to life.
Nicole Kidman Pushed Herself To The Limit During Intense ‘Practical Magic’ Scene
As ‘Practical Magic‘ gets ready for its first-ever 4K UHD release on August 25, producer Denise Di Novi looked back at one of the film’s most unforgettable behind-the-scenes stories. According to her, the toughest scene to shoot involved Gillian, Sally, Frances and Jet trying to banish the spirit of Jimmy, Gillian’s deceased partner played by Goran Višnjić.
Di Novi explained that the emotional exorcism sequence demanded everything from the actors. She recalled, “I mean, probably the most difficult scene was when they were trying to vanquish Jimmy’s spirit with the coven, the group of women. It was Goran Višnjić. And it was really intense for the actors in the circle of the coven and Nicole Kidman was possessed.”
Kidman completely immersed herself in the role during filming. Di Novi said, “And she definitely throws herself into a role in every scene. It was very, very tough for her. She even kind of burst a few blood vessels in her face while she was shooting that scene. It was incredibly intense and everyone really, really threw themselves into it in a very realistic way.”

Di Novi’s latest comments also reveal just how committed Kidman was throughout the movie. Even though ‘Practical Magic‘ blends romance, fantasy and comedy, the actress approached its emotional scenes with total dedication.

The producer shared that Kidman never held back, no matter what kind of scene she was filming. According to Di Novi, the emotional sequence was physically exhausting because every actor wanted it to feel as authentic as possible. That level of commitment is exactly why the moment still stands out more than two decades later.
Looking back now, Di Novi believes Kidman’s fearless performance became one of the reasons ‘Practical Magic‘ has remained such a fan favorite. The emotional scene may have lasted only a few minutes on screen, but the effort behind it was very real, and Kidman literally left part of herself in the performance.
While reflecting on the film, Di Novi also praised Kidman and Sandra Bullock for the incredible chemistry they brought to the screen. She admitted she could tell right away that audiences were watching something special. More than 25 years later, fans are still obsessed with ‘Practical Magic’, and we can’t wait to see how ‘Practical Magic 2‘ turned out.
