Disney has been focusing more on live-action remakes in the last few years and they have a few more projects under development. While a few of them have received a positive response, there were others that bombed at the box office along with getting negative reviews from critics. Now there is another project in the lineup, which is ‘The Little Mermaid.’
It will be an adaptation of the 1989 animated film of the same name which was inspired by a fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen. The project was in development for a long time with the release date not being revealed for a long time along with being involved in some controversies. Let’s check when we would get to witness the grand project on the big screen.

‘The Little Mermaid’: Plot Details
‘The Little Mermaid’ plot is not unknown to anyone. Everyone is well aware of what they witnessed in the original film and things are expected to remain the same with the producers taking liberties to bring some minor changes in the vision of the film.
According to the official synopsis, it will follow the life of Ariel, who is a young mermaid always aiming to have some adventure in her life. She is the youngest daughter of King Triton and she plans to find what exists beyond the sea. When she reaches the surface, she falls in love with Prince Eric.
Ariel decides to listen to her heart despite knowing that mermaids are not allowed to speak to human beings. She eventually meets the evil sea witch Ursula, who offers her the opportunity to explore everything on land but the deal puts her life and her father’s crown in danger.

‘The Little Mermaid’: Cast And Release Date
‘The Little Mermaid’ is directed by Rob Marshall with Halle Bailey playing the lead role of Ariel alongside Melissa McCarthy portraying Ursula. The rest of the characters shall be played by Jonah Hauer-King, Javier Bardem, Art Malik, Noma Dumezweni, Lorena Andrea, Simone Ashley, Kajsa Mohammar, Nathalie Sorrell, Karolina Conchet, and Sienna King.
The film entered production in 2016 and Marshall was hired in 2017. The casting process was completed by 2021 and although filming was scheduled to begin in 2020, it was delayed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. ‘The Little Mermaid’ is scheduled to be released on May 26, 2023.
