Superhero movies are known for accumulating a lot of profit at the box office. This is one of the reasons why MCU and DCEU have earned billions but since 2022, the franchises have been struggling to get a positive response. James Gunn joined DC Studios in 2022 and his plans for the franchise have raised hope.
Gunn has worked at both Marvel and DC and he has shared his opinion on why the projects have been failing for some time.
James Gunn Criticizes The Current Standard Of Superhero Films
During his appearance on ‘Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum’, James Gunn said that modern superhero films have lazy storytelling for which they are failing. Gunn ensured that the upcoming projects of the DCEU will be better than how they have been over the years.
He added, “People have gotten really lazy with their superhero stories.” He said that producers are simply making films because they wish to bring the superhero onto the big screen and then make a sequel if the first film is successful. He mentioned that the makers are not analyzing the positive and negative sides of the projects.
Gunn even addressed the third acts of the last few superhero films, saying that the characters have become generic. He added that he likes to explore the elements of comedy, seriousness, and murder mystery in superhero films and not repeat the same thing every time.

‘Superman: Legacy’ Will Be The First Film Among New Projects Of DCEU
James Gunn already confirmed a long time ago that ‘Superman: Legacy’ will be arriving on the big screen on July 11, 2025. Gunn will also write the screenplay for the film. The lead roles of Superman and Lois Lane will be played by David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, respectively.
Although plot details have not been disclosed, the film won’t be an origin story as has happened in the previous superhero films. There is a possibility that Clark Kent’s earlier days before becoming a superhero will be featured in the film.
