Tom Hanks‘ performance in ‘Forrest Gump‘ ended up becoming one of the most memorable moments in his career and has continued to be one of his most loved works, leading to the film’s status as a classic.
While the standalone film continues to win hearts, many fans had expressed interest in its potential sequel to show the character’s life in later days. Here’s why Tom Hanks thinks a sequel would have been an awful idea.
Tom Hanks Is Against The Idea Of A ‘Forrest Gump’ Sequel
As Tom Hanks has returned to the screens with his Forrest Gump co-star Robin Wright and director Robert Zemeckis for their latest movie ‘Here‘, he also sat down to talk about why he’s grateful there wasn’t any sequel to the film.
During an interview with The New York Times, the actor said, “It is this extraordinary amalgam that stands completely on its own and never has to be repeated.”
“And thank God we never bothered trying to make another one. Why put a hat on a hat?” he added.
What Is ‘Forrest Gump’ About?
The 1986 novel by late author Winston Groom served as the inspiration for Tom Hanks’s portrayal of the title character in ‘Forrest Gump‘. From the 1950s through the 1970s, the movie chronicles the life of Forrest Gump, an Alabama man with an IQ of 75 who longs to be reunited with his boyhood sweetheart.
Speaking to The Times, Hank opened up about how he feels about the influence the film has had on people. He stated, “I still get letters all the time saying, every year the family gets together, we do what we did back in 1995, when it first came out on home video.”

“We all watch it, from beginning to end. Right now, someone is watching that movie from beginning to end somewhere in the world. And it’s landing with that same sense of comfort and familiarity,” he added.
Hanks is perhaps right — ‘Forrest Gump‘ is too iconic for it to be stretched any further.
