    Where Was ‘Forrest Gump’ Filmed? All Shoot Locations

    ‘Forrest Gump is an American comedy-drama starring Tom Hanks in the titular role of Forrest Gump. It is based on a novel of the same name published in 1986 by author Winston Groome. It is a motivational film based on the life of a fictional man named Forrest Gump. Gump battles through all the obstacles in his life and becomes a part of many historic moments in America’s history. He overcomes difficulties and at last fulfills all his wishes. The film also stars actors like Robin Wright, Sally Field, Gary Sinise, Mykelti Williamson, Peter Dobson, and Sam Anderson.

    The movie was a commercial success on release in the United States in July 1994. It earned $678.2 million against the production budget of $55 million. It was also a critical success as it won six Academy Awards out of the possible 13 nominations. The film was also nominated for seven Golden Globe Awards, winning three.

    Is ‘Forrest Gump’ Town Greenbow Real? Where Was The Movie Filmed?

    Although the film is based in the fictional town of Greenbow in Alabama, the majority of the film was shot in North Carolina and South Carolina. As the film takes Gump through different places as he grows up, the film has been filmed in many different locations. The estimated locations where the movie has been filmed can range up to 30.  

    The major filming location was the town of Beaufort in South Carolina. Apart from Beaufort, principal photography also took place in small towns in North Carolina and the coasts of Virginia. Varnville, South Carolina was the location where they shot the downtown Greenbow area. Forrest’s home, also the Gump family home, was built in the city of Yemassee in South Carolina. The house resides along the bank of the river Combahee. The area called Grandfather Mountain, where scenes of Gump running have been filmed has now been immortalized as ‘Forrest Gump Curve’, where tourists still visit to film themselves running.

    The scene where Forrest narrates the story of his life to other people is filmed in Savannah, Georgia at Chippewa Square. It is also the place where Gump says the iconic chocolate line which goes as “Mama always said life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get.” Many other running shots have also been filmed in Savannah.

    The Marshall Point Lighthouse in Port Clyde, Maine, is the lighthouse that Forrest sprints through to reach the Atlantic Ocean for the first time. Gump’s college scenes were mostly filmed at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles. Many other popular scenes were filmed in places like Glacier National Park in Montana, Arizona, and Monument Valley in Utah. The scene where he decides to stop running is filmed in Monument Valley. It is considered to be one of the best Tom Hanks movies, as it also has six Academy Awards.
