Tom Cruise was already one of Hollywood’s biggest stars when he signed on for ‘Jerry Maguire‘, but his deal for the 1996 hit was far from what anyone might expect.

Despite taking the lead role in the romantic sports comedy-drama, Cruise reportedly acted in the film for free. Even more surprising, he later explained what he believed the filmmakers were actually paying him to do.

From the initial days, creator Cameron Crowe had second thoughts about the movie’s reception among the audience. Even the studio had its own doubts about whether the audience would get the rapport of the film. However, Tom Cruise was the one who took the lead and made sure that the movie ‘Jerry Maguire’ reached the public.

During a conversation with Alec Baldwin on the Here’s the Thing podcast, Cameron Crowe recalled, “Your friends take you aside and say, ‘When Tom Cruise says yes, you lose your power. You can’t do a thing. It just becomes a freight train that’s out of control, and it’s a Hollywood freight train and you’ll be lucky if you see the back of the caboose.’ And you get terrified. And then Tom Cruise calls from England and says, ‘I read your script. I hope I’m the right guy. Let me come out and read it for you.’

Instead of using his fame to take control, Cruise offered to read for the role and make sure the project worked for both sides. Crowe remembered his own surprise, saying, “Wait. You’re gonna come out here and read it? ‘Yeah,’ he said. ‘Why not know it’s right for both of us?’ And he was ‘that guy’ from the moment he got off the plane.”

Cruise’s work did not end when the cameras stopped rolling. Although he reportedly acted in ‘Jerry Maguire‘ for free, he took on a major role in promoting the movie. According to Crowe’s account, Cruise viewed publicity as the part of the job for which he was actually being paid. The actor threw himself into the promotional campaign and appeared on major programs to build interest in the release.

Crowe recalled, “Tom … came from London to New York and said, ‘Boys, I’m gonna do some promotion’. And he started on a Monday, did Rosie, did Larry King, did everything … by the end of the week, our numbers were way high. It was the brawn of him coming to say, ‘OK, guys, I act for free. This is what you pay me for. I’m going to give them everything I’ve got for this movie.’”

Cruise treated acting as the part he would give to the project without a fee, while he saw the promotional work as a separate responsibility. Thankfully, the effort paid off in a major way. ‘Jerry Maguire‘ became a box office hit and earned $273 million worldwide. Cruise’s performance also became one of the most memorable of his career. Years later, the film remains a beloved Hollywood classic!
