Taylor Swift might be in the lavender haze with her new beau Travis Kelce, but reports and rumors of her last relationship seem to be never-ending. As Swift released a vault track for her last album ‘Midnights’, one that many speculate to be about Joe Alwyn and what actually went down.
In the latest reports, Swift’s longtime friend and collaborator Jack Antonoff has given a shocking insight into their breakup. Here’s what he said.

Jaylor Breakup Timeline
Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn’s breakup rumors started early on this year, as Joe didn’t attend any of her shows, and media publications started writing speculative pieces on their supposed split. Soon enough, it was confirmed by Swift’s team and her quick fling with Matty Healey.
According to the speculations, Taylor and Joe broke up sometime in April. Up until February Alwyn was still posting pictures of Swift’s cats and details about their relationship were shown in the music video of ‘Lavender Haze‘, a song written for Alwyn which came out in October 2022 and the music video came out in February.
After news of their breakup started circulating, it became more and more evident that the split really happened. Further on, her romance with Travis Kelce confirmed things.
According to ‘You’re Losing Me’, their relationship couldn’t go on any longer, mostly because they both looked for different things in the relationship. Presumably, Swift wanted to take things towards marriage and Alwyn didn’t. Further on, she sings about feeling like he doesn’t see her anymore and she feels like he’s losing her slowly. The song is the only concrete evidence of the ‘whys’ behind their breakup as neither side has not given any statement. Now, however, Jack Antonoff’s little detail about the song reveals that their relationship was over way before than we thought.

Did Taylor Swift And Joe Alwyn Break Up In 2021?
Jack Antonoff has revealed that the song that told the story of the couple’s breakup, was actually written two years ago.

So did Taylor and Joe actually break up two years ago? Seems unlikely. According to Jack, the song was written on 12th May 2021. On 11th May 2021, one day before she wrote the song, Taylor accepted her award for BRITS Global Icon and gave a shoutout to Joe Alwyn in her speech.

Later, in February 2022, Joe Alwyn confirmed that he was still dating Taylor and said, “I think people can do what they want and makes them happy. I’m obviously happy in a monogamous relationship,”
In April 2022, Alwyn did a number of interviews for his series ‘Conversations With Friends‘. In most of them, he was asked about Swift and he made a lot of comments, mostly about privacy. “If I had a pound for every time I think I’ve been told I’ve been engaged, then I’d have a lot of pound coins. I mean, the truth is, if the answer was yes, I wouldn’t say, and if the answer was no, I wouldn’t say“, he said to WSJ.
Further, he talked about his songwriting experience with Swift and revealed, “It wasn’t like, ‘It’s five o’clock, it’s time to try and write a song together.’ It came about from messing around on a piano, and singing badly, then being overheard, and being, like, ‘Let’s see what happens if we get to the end of it together.’ I mean fun is such a stupid word, but it was a lot of fun. And it was never a work thing, or a ‘Let’s try and do this because we’re going to put this out’ thing. It was just like baking sourdough in lockdown. The Grammy was obviously this ridiculous bonus.”
In June 2022, the lovebirds were seen getting cozy on a beach in the Bahamas. Pictures of them kissing in the waters surfaced, and they looked very much in love.
The month after, in July, they were seen together again, taking a walk hand in hand.
In August, they went out for a dinner date. Followed by October’s release of ‘Midnights’ where Taylor talked about how ‘Lavender Haze’ is about Alwyn. He also got songwriting credits for ‘Sweet Nothing’ on the album.
What’s The Truth?
The conclusion is that it is highly unlikely that they broke up that early. It might be that they started having issues early on, or the song might just not be about Alwyn, who knows? None of them confirmed it after all.
As of now, Swifties continue to speculate more details about the breakup. Perhaps another album, or another song could put things into perspective.
Till then, stream ‘You’re Losing Me‘ by Taylor Swift.
