People were in high spirits at E11EVEN in Miami as their party was unexpectedly graced with Nicki Minaj performances. While the new year’s countdown had not begun yet and her performance was the treat of the hour, Minaj suddenly stopped singing the song ‘Starships‘.

In a TikTok video that recorded the incident, Minaj allows the crowd to sing most of the song’s lyrics for a while and then signals for the backing track to stop. “Hold on. Psych, psych, psych, psych. I don’t perform that song no more, y’all. I don’t like it, what y’all want me to do? Stupid song,” Minaj says.

Then the rapper smoothly transitions into performing another one of her popular songs ‘Super Bass’, and the crowd gets instantly back into the party frenzy. However, many were left wondering why Minaj may have done what she did, especially when it’s not the first time that she has expressed her aversion to ‘Starships’.

During an interview with Pollstar Live in 2020, Nicki Minaj said she hates that song of hers. “I hate ‘Starships,’ I mean ew, ‘Starships?’ I’m like, ‘Why did I do that?’ I really think that every time I hear it,” she said during the interview. The rapper had also slammed some of her other works including ‘Anaconda‘ and ‘Your Love’.

Though she has never specified the reason behind her hatred for the song, her fans have often speculated the reasons behind it. While some suggest it could just be dissatisfaction with work, others have connected it with some possible personal memory she has attached to the song that she wants to trash.

Meanwhile, Minaj has been doing great career-wise as 2023 saw the release of her fifth studio album, ‘Pink Friday 2′ in December. The album is a sequel to her 2010 debut and has proven to be a milestone in her career.

Minaj also hosted the MTV VMAs for the second time this year, collaborated with Ice Spice on ‘Barbie World’ for the Barbie soundtrack, featured on albums by Young Thug and Lil Uzi Vert, and launched a new fragrance alongside her album. The rapper is now gearing up for her international Pink Friday 2 World Tour across 37 cities between March and June.
