Selena started teasing her new single in Dallas. Fans noticed mysterious, new “Single Soon?” posters in Dallas, Texas, her hometown, earlier this month. Before long, they started to go viral. The posters included a phone number, and if you called it, Gracie Elliot Teefey, Selena’s younger sister, would leave a message that began, “Hi, I love you, sissy; never worry about boyfriends at all.”
She then announced that she would be dropping her latest single towards the end of August, and now that it’s out, fans are speculating what the lyrics mean.
Selena sings about choosing to break up with someone and how relieving that is. She attempts to figure out how to end the relationship in the first verse. She says : “Should I do it on the phone? / Should I leave a little note / In the pocket of his coat? / Maybe I’ll just disappear / I don’t wanna see a tear / And the weekend’s almost here.“
Towards the chorus, she is celebrating singlehood and sings “I know he’ll be a wreck when I break the news, but I’ll be single soon”. She then continues, “Imma date who I wanna / Stay out late if I wanna / I’ma do what I wanna do,” in the post-chorus.“
In Gomez’s words, she defines it as “a playful anthem about being comfortable in your own skin and loving your own company… and it’s also really fun to dance to“
